An international Transgender Day of Remembrance site has a list of vigils around the world, including one in Montreal. Click here to see the list.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is officially Tuesday, Nov. 20, but vigils were held on the weekend in many cities. There are also some scheduled for today and tomorrow.

I saw a report on CTV News yesterday about one such event in Edmonton, held in a church where the names of more than 200 victims of anti-transgender violence were read out. Sadly, the trans people there didn’t want their faces shown on camera, because they fear transphobic violence.

It is something all of us — no matter where we fall in the trans spectrum — worry about, even here in peaceful and mostly tolerant Canada. I am a transitioned woman, legally recognized as Female, but there are still some who would hurt me because of their prejudice and hatred . . . and ignorance.
